Every crochet piece on this page was made by a person with a hook, not a machine. Crochet cannot be mass-produced — there is no crochet loom — so each cardigan, kimono and jacket is worked stitch by stitch by our artisan partners, many of them women working from home in India and Nepal. A single granny-square kimono takes days. That is why our crochet looks different from the "crochet-look" knits in department stores: the stitches are open and three-dimensional, the edges are finished by hand, and no two pieces are quite the same.

How to wear crochet after 50. Treat it as texture, not as a statement: a crochet cardigan over a plain tank and straight trousers, a crochet kimono over a slip dress, a crochet jacket over a white shirt. Keep the colors underneath solid so the stitchwork reads. In cotton it layers through three seasons; in wool blends it is a real winter piece.
Care. Hand wash cool, press out water in a towel, lay flat and reshape. Store folded.
